The PCI Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is a set of industry requirements for any organization that stores, processes or transmits cardholder data.  The Standard is global, and applies to companies of any size.  In addition, organizations need to store, transmit or process just a single credit card number in order to be impacted by the PCI requirements.  PCI compliance is monitored by banks and credit card companies; merchants, banks and payment processors are all organizations that must comply.
